Convert movie.avi to DVD - length of time?

I have a new Dell studio laptop with windows 7 and windows DVD maker, why does it take 3 hours to encode a movie to burn a DVD. Even using ConvertX takes over 2 hours. What is the best way around this other than using a flash drive.
